The Olympics has taken some of my sewing time this weekend.  Oh well, every 4 years.  However I did complete one small (very) project. A sunglasses case.  I have had this fabric for a while, it has been waiting for the right project.  I still plan to make a wallet, change purse, AND purse. Might be a while!! I am not going to wait until they are finished to use it.
A link to the tutorial I used to make it:

I also finished a fabric bowl or basket.  Pictures to come later.  And made some wonky log cabin blocks for a table runner I have planned.  Searched for and found a pattern for a child's apron I want to make.  Not too bad really????

Quilted Bag

Fabric choices. Can you tell BLUE is my favorite color??

 I like lots of pockets!!
The main bag piece, the sides and the large outside pocket are quilted, by ME.
Inside pockets too.  One on each end and one on the inside front.  More!!
This is a BIG bag. Can go to the beach or to a quilt show!!
It has already been to the beach.  Can hold 4 large towels, or one small child
Yes, this was the bag I was going to enter in Purse Palooza. I missed the deadline, OH WELL.

In another part of my life I am an Oncology Nurse Practitioner. Lilly Pharmaceuticals sponsors an art competition for anyone affected by Cancer. Patients, survivors, caregivers, family, friends and health care workers. (I think this covers everyone.) It is called Lilly Oncology on Canvas. This is a link to the website. http://www.lillyoncologyoncanvas.com/Pages/Index.aspx The piece above is on its way to New York City to be judged in the competition. It is in the mixed media category and is acrylic and fabric on canvas. The title is "Out of Darkness and Fire Comes a New Day". It is in honor and in memory of all the young adults that I have had the pleasure to care for during my Oncology career. They are just beginning their lives when life is interrupted. First Prize winners get $10,000.00 donated to the cancer related charity of his/her choice. Wow, that would be cool. Many of the entries will go on tour of hospitals and cancer centers around the country. Let me know what you think.

My latest quilt.  "Megan's Buttons and Bows".  Machine pieced.  Machine embroidered. Machine quilted. Machine bound.  Hand is a 4 letter word to me.  :-)
It began with 6" squares sewn into HSTs and then into the Bow Tie blocks that were squared to 4.5 inches making them 4" in the finished quilt.  A few of the squares were machine embroidered with buttons prior to being sewn into rows.  The buttons were placed randomly in the pattern.  My son, Landon, helped me with the layout.  In the picture of the squares before being sewn together there is an error in the pattern.  Can you find it?  Yes, I fixed it (Landon found it).  He has a good eye.
Yes, there is a "surprise" square in the pattern.  The backing is flannel.  The batting is Warm and Natural.  The heavy machine quilting, done on my Husqvarna/Viking Designer II, is a random swirl pattern on the rows and a meandering pattern on the borders.  It measures 36 x 40.

Nuts and Bolts of Faith

Faith is a choice.  That is the "Nuts and Bolts" of it all.  This painting is a highly texturized cross with Nuts, Bolts and Washers imbedded in the work.  It was created with someone special in mind.  It is 5 x 7 Multimedia on canvas panel.

Step back in time-Irish Style!

In honor of St. Patrick's Day, I thought I would post these photos from the early part of the century ;-). These are pictures of a quilt done in 2001 for a benefit auction for my son's high school, Notre Dame High School, Chattanooga, TN. It was great fun and now lives in Tennessee.

This is a cover for my Kindle. I didn't want the cover to add to the weight and bulk when I was reading, so I designed just a slipcase. I love the fabric, but I am doing another to match a new purse project I am planning. I am planning to write a tutorial as I go.

Funky Fence Rail Quilt 1

This is a recent quilt. I had not made a quilt in a while and felt the "call" to do so. Was going to make a simple fence rail, but decided to jazz it up a bit and cut some uneven strips and play with the placement a bit. I like the result. The finished quilt is approximately 70 x 70 inches and has a new home in Georgia.

Hello all!! Welcome

Welcome to my new Blog. My name is Ellen Stone, thus the name "Rock". I love to create art in all mediums. Particularly acrylic painting, fiber art, quilting and mixed media. Some of my art is usable, quilts, pillows, bags etc. and some is strictly "fine art". I see inspiration everywhere and try to make it my own.

My first painting I am posting is called The Path. It is in a private collection in North Carolina. I love painting roads and pathways as they symbolize the journey of life and faith. Hope you like it and thanks for visiting
